In these days of increasing crime against children and women across different parts of India, a notion of crime free society definitely would sound like a pipe dream for many of us. Having said that, what are the avenues we can think of to take India in this direction? Is it a lost cause? Do we have some hope at least with a new government in place? Do citizens have a say in it? What about legalities and punishment?
Yes, typically we tend to get lost in a multitude of questions ourselves. Here are few perspectives which may trigger some views for a healthy debate:
1. These crimes were always happening and it is just that the reporting has increased especially with the media trying to stir the collective conscience and guilt.
- To some extent, this could be true. But this is definitely not an excuse for ensuring the safety of women and children!
2. As any adult theme is a social taboo, the society by and large has a long suppressed desire to somehow enjoy physical relationship especially in cases where there is sudden and sustained exposure to the urban culture in the cities for those coming from a disadvantaged section of the society. This also blinds the individuals in terms of propriety!
- True in many cases. But not so in some cases where seemingly rich and upwardly mobile are also culprits on few occasions!
3. Information explosion in the form of internet, cable TV and other entertainment avenues has only resulted in more and more craving for material pleasures wherein hedonistic tendencies tend to dominate at an individual level overruling a rational approach of what is right and what is wrong!
- True. You can't stop the world and internet!
4. Value system is skewed in the society as we tend to portray success at any cost as an ultimate achievement without bothering about the righteousness (dharma) expected!
- True! Any views?
5. Conviction and punishment for the reported crimes have been abysmally low vis-a-vis the total number of crimes which only emboldens those on the edge to pursue their criminal tendencies.
-Thanks to the media glare now on every crime being reported especially in the cities, this could change. But more the number of cases, more the delay in meting out justice!
Now few solutions that could be worth trying:
1. Significant enhancement of punishment for crimes under question
2. A more liberal approach towards physical relationship and legal avenues to address the biological cravings
3. CCTVs galore! Increase the surveillance!
4. Background verification is a must for every employment though it is no guarantee for the future behaviour,
5. A mechanism to ensure that no citizen is alone in a vulnerable situation - Easier said than done; but worth an attempt!
